Nonfunctional alcoholism is when you literally can't function without drinking, this is at its worse Leaving Las Vegas tier or more commonly someone who has to drink in the morning to stop their hands from shaking. The dependence is mental and physical.
Functioning alcoholism is more mental than physical. They aren't physically dependent on it but their entire day and hence entire life is scheduled around drinking. Work, family, friends, hobbies etc are distractions or hinderances to drinky time, which makes them anxious. Getting to the liquor store before it closes is more important than any other chore. They start stockpiling booze, keep a mental tab of where and when they can get it to avoid suspicion and try to hide evidence of the quantity they drink. They can blend in in social situations involving alcohol perfectly but will avoid anything that doesn't involve drinking. It's also almost impossible for them to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with a meal or alone without feeling the urge to get more and get fully drunk.
