People in the west try to draw Susie/Kris like actual teenagers because the game is blatantly set in a small American town and most artist types relate to the idea of being an unshaven lonely freak.
People in Japan have a more idealistic approach to art, so there's less attempts at stylized realism.
Personally, I like both approaches. Seeing the gang as both stylish heroes and a shlubby gang of retarded teenagers is fun.
