Wario land/world also feels like a continuation story type of mario character subseries but it varies. The latest game had the most care about that aspect, especially aesthetic wise, before the series got shelved.
Luigi's mansion does feel like some story is happening at times, but it's always at a haunted building with King boo capturing something Luigi needs to save. It's pretty much like most of mario mainline games (which also favor rescue plots) but with a lot more cutscene character animation.
Mario sunshine involvement was one of the only times the Luigi's mansion games felt contributing to lore and story. The other time is LM1 stuff like the ghost painting descriptions of LM1, but then the series turned way more light hearted and less lore-heavy.

Donkey kong does care about lore. With Cranky kong consistently referring to DK Arcade mario lore in DKC games (along with the opening of the first referencing the iconic mario DK girders) to developing the kong family each game. DK Games don't feel like a reset every installment.
