I'd argue some of the early 2000s anime is pretty retro now because of all the experimenting going on. There's that 5ish year period from like 1999 to 2004 where so much of what was made looks pretty damn different / unique compared to what came before and after. It's the era of hidden gems and those gems are pretty retro today
