In late medieval ages, catholic church had to do some reforms, because of success which protestants gained. Over time, catholic church also got "entrenched" in their power structure.
But in Islam, they are also changing, and there is modern day challenges. Some years ago, there was HUGE religious congress (or something along the lines), related to modern day issues. Like, how to tackle transgender converts. There was one british soldier, who changed gender, later became muslim. And wanted to pray in women section of mosque, or smth like that. Was not allowed.
There was need to get consensus among muslim scholars. And nation who would host such congress, would get some portion of prestige and influence. If remember correctly, it was hosted by Saudi Arabia.
