Aerodynamics don't matter much. Force distribution does. If you run sims until you get a shape that minimizes sheer forces across the body of the vessel as it maneuvers you end up with a flying saucer. The weak point in most designs is where the wings attach to the fuselage. To make them stronger you thicken the connection point to distribute the force over a wider area. If you keep doing that you end up with a saucer.
