reason for this phenomenon is actually answered by Carl Jung - most men have a problematic relationship with their anima (soul) which is the root of femininity in all humans. And while women are fairly comfortable with femininity and don't pay much attention to it, men constantly try to figure out how to wrestle with femininity and often project it onto real life women, onto co-workers, or onto fictional characters. It's not so much of a "I want to be a woman" but more of a "I want to figure out what this women thing is, because it's an annoying puzzle that keeps me incomplete"
