>Ukraine recently imposed personal sanctions on 15 heads of Russian museums.
Among those now under sanctions:
▪ Roman Valeryevich Kovrikov, Director General of the State Museum-Reserve "Peterhof" (St. Petersburg). He visited the temporarily occupied territories at least three times.
▪ Dmitry Alexandrovich Kozhanov, Director General of the Polytechnic Museum (Moscow).
▪ Igor Valeryevich Korneev, Director of the State Borodino Military Historical Museum-Reserve (Moscow region).
▪ Yulia Arkadiyevna Kupina, Director of the Russian Ethnographic Museum (St. Petersburg).
▪ Mikhail Borisovich Mindlin, Director of the Andrey Rublev Museum of Old Russian Art and Culture (Moscow).
▪ Yury Eduardovich Komlev, Director of the Orenburg Museum of Fine Arts (Orenburg).
▪ Irina Petrovna Menshikova, Director of the Chuvash National Museum (Cheboksary).
▪ Alexander Matveevich Ushakov, Director of the Orenburg Governor’s Museum (Orenburg).
▪ Oleg Ivanovich Chepurnoy, since 2023 - Deputy Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow). Previously - head of the Border Service Archive of the FSB (public records from a decade ago indicate he held the rank of FSB colonel, likely promoted since).
And others.
For many Russian museum managers and researchers, this is a serious signal: being added to a sanctions list can halt both their professional and academic careers.
As a result of Russia's invasion, dozens of Ukrainian museum workers have been killed, and many Ukrainian museums have been destroyed or looted.
Pretending that Russian museum figures are "just following orders" won't work.
