It was a big gateway, but not everyone took that route. Some still use it to this day because it's still a great opportunity to show what you can do, if only due to the sheer amount of lines you get. Some also did the reverse, playing characters in eroge despite being established big league VAs. Those people are usually not involved in H scenes though.
