I think with these kinds of things, even in their cruelty the children are kind of naive.
It's because of this that they're capable of casual cruelty without knowing what the results will be or why they're even doing it. It's easy as an adult to project intentions and motivations onto kids just acting on their first instinct, which is often uninformed, based on their environment, and terrible.
That being said that person while well intentioned is projecting a lot of their own situation into their reasoning, but I can't blame them.
