The French Republic went through four different state religions before Napoleon introduced religious pluralism, the first attempt at secularism by a French regime. The first was the Constitutional Church, an Anglicanism-based Protestant sect mandated by the French state on pain of death for all clergy who refused to join it. This officially persisted concurrently with the other three state religions, but was effectively a form of controlled opposition for the atheist regime.
