neon genesis evangelion is a pro-gnostic or 'pro-simulation' art story if anything. it's the secret cabal in the anime, the ones composing the organization seele that is behind the subverted un, that wants to break free from individual 'material' or 'created' existence. and in the end they pretty much do so through the totalitarian imposed subsuming of all individuals (seen as inherent sub-sets) into the 'greater rei/lilith' set - the instrumentality project is an anti-individuality project which pretty much means it's anti-being. shinji and asuka were the ones to reject such proposition. rei and kaworu still had their agency intact, even though rei had became some sort of 'demi-godhead' she still gave him (shinji) the ability to chose his own destiny and so the destiny of the earth. while they are merged as one being, shinji says that the indifference of such indefinite state was eerily akin to nothingness, which he had confused as being dead. she says that while he isnt dead, he can still be truly 'himself' if he wants to, but so the walls of such state would disintegrate. he looks to the cross he held in his hands, that which misato gave him, and decides to go back to earth. there he finds asuka, a kind of childish egotistical girl but definitely the representation of the 'will to be an individual' which is true for throughout the entire series shes pretty much self-referential. he had feelings for her despite being an ambiguous doormat scared of suffering and of disappointing others, which for awhile was a similarity between him and the seele philosophically speaking. due to that they both (shinji and asuka) acted as a sort of nemesis for each other. however in that post-apocalyptic scene is also the most dualistic and pro-gnostic thing ever depicted in the media, and for me, the most complete symbolic artwork ever done ever.
