WN has torture, rape, dark humor, unhinged naofumi and bestiality. The story slowly descends into a fever dream starting with the child slave village arc. It's really fun and much better than the subsequent adaptations in my humble opinion. Not everyone is going to enjoy or be able to power through the boring parts unfortunately.
The LN and by extension the anime have expanded the world. Lots of places which are only mentioned in passing or rushed through are more in-depth explored in the LN/anime.
