in the early 2000s, gaming used to have tons of weird MMOs
some examples:
>Space Cowboys Online
a spaceplane dogfighting MMO where you try to shoot down enemies, barrel roll their missiles, can pick various classes that have different strengths (including a terrestrial hovertank)
>Planetside
a faction-based arena shooter MMO with complex vehicle combat where eg. a tank requires multiple crewmembers to function. had complicated supply gameplay and many wars were won/lost based on one person smuggling supplies past a siege line or some group of ambitious people doing a generator hold
>Urban Dead
a browser based zombie survival MMO where you could play as humans or zombies in a huge city
>Eve Online
a complicated strategic spaceship combat MMO with intricate economics and ship builds
then at some point everything became a shitty WoW clone. thanks, casuals
