My understanding was that was quite a bit of debate within Iran as to whether they should commit to building a nuclear weapon and that the pro-nuke crowd more or less won out after Trump threw out the original Iran deal during his first term.

Furthermore, ever since the Russian invasion of Ukraine (arguably the American invasion of Iraq even), there's been a growing international sentiment that the only way that nations can decidedly protect themselves from foreign aggression is to possess nuclear weapons. By attacking Iran over its nuclear program, the Israelis have only further validated that belief in the minds of both Iranians and non-Iranians. Which is why I said that the only way for Israel to achieve their stated goal of stopping Iran from going nuclear is to totally and completely destroy the infrastructure capable of supporting it in a way that it can't be rebuilt. If they half-ass it, the Iranians will double down the first chance they get and a nuclear Iran will simply be a mere matter of time.

Let's not forget how the last few attempts by average Iranians to force a change in their government went (abysmal failure, further doubling down, etc.).
