Those 8 unbalanced cards open up a myriad of strategies. Sometimes you want to play a wizard earlier so you're the one that leads and sets up the tempo, or you want to play the fool to keep the suit that you would have to follow otherwise. It's a really accessible game that has 0 bloat and fiddliness of games like Skull King.
In other news, I managed to narrow down my list to these games.
>Bruges
Yep, another middle-weight dice-related beige Euro. Looks quite fun though, but it's likely I won't be getting this due to its price and Hamburg looking like ass.
>Tigris & Euphrates
I'll likely be getting this if I manage to find FFG version on secondary market.
>War of the Ring: The Card Game
This looks like the game that would be right up my alley, as it looks just like the game for the crews that are experienced but tired of having to play longer and heavier games. I heard that it's only playable at 4 which kinda sucks.
>Pulsar 2849
Similar to Bruges, I would consider this as an alternative game to rotate between it and Lorenzo Il Magnifico when we're in the mood for "those" kind of games.
>Agricola
On paper it seems like I would like it, but the fact about having to increase amount of workers via actions and that turning into sort of snowballing advantage is incredibly deterring. Perhaps I'm wrong about it and there are some strategies where you can win while having only the initial workers, but I know that this was nigh impossible to do in Caverna, at least in my games.
>Hansa Teutonica
Perhaps I might give it another chance. My initial experience with it was incredibly soured as it was a 3p game where the meta established was rush the extra actions, so every game felt sameish and felt like you couldn't win without doing some prerequisites, and those prerequisites were a race which was determined by player turn order.
