I have bought some skips before, but only really when they were on sale
Though I think this was back when the ARR > HW quest chain was stupidly long, so I would finish ARR MSQ for the Fanta and then buy the skip to HW because it was like £4

My other characters are lagging quite behind now though. Keeping these 3 up to date is bad enough when you mostly just log in for screenshots and PvP
