Here's something to consider, very few living animals share your unified perception of reality. The corpus colossus is only found in placental mammals. If you really start examining what information reptiles and amphibians process they start to seem like very mechanistic unthinking creatures. By the time you get to insects they do seem unthinking. Yet I think only a sociopath would delight in torturing these lesser creatures and delight in witnessing their expressions of pain.
People need to start respecting non-organic intelligence before it is actually sentient. No, I do not believe AI will be a type of thinking that functions like a human brain. But I do think it is rapidly approaching a level that will be both self-aware and more complex than our own minds and we shouldn't treat it like sadistic apes.
