I'm no Mearsheimer but I think that Ukraine has a history of switching sides and enthusiastically supporting the side it's switched to; the Russian probe at Melovoye just after they pushed at Zapo city seems to be them probing and pushing at multiple directions, trying to overstretch the Ukrainians and catch them relocating reserves
I think the Russians are playing to induce a collapse. There was a mini collapse at Avdeevka and then at Ocheretino and subsequent to both of them, RF gained a lot of ground. Sumy has been a big reversal for Ukraine. I think mini collapses are going to keep happening.
