India can't be buddhist or Muslims would just take over, Hinduism is Sri Lanka's wall. Ram defeated Ravana who held Sita captive in Sri Lanka after Hanuman carried him there so it was Hindu before it was Buddhist.

Sri Lanka became Buddhist under Ashoka's son and continued trading with Myanmar + Thailand by sea whereas India didn't.
