I don't think it might take you away from the My time at/Havest Moon route. Its plays off as (you) cleaning up the island, add stuff that will attract tourists, and you make money off of them.
The Animal Crossing aspect is finding Villagers and inviting them to your island. From there, when you have enough friend ship points, you can decorate their small room. They also ask you for food, furniture, and clothing on the side. You can also employ them to work in certain building to help make you more money.
There is the "exploration" part. You get a boat, and you go to many island for the sole purpose of exploring, finding stuff, and bring it back to your island to make your island better for tourism sim money. There is a diving aspect that require you to dive under water many times to get some items found only underwater.
There is a farming aspect where you plant stuff like a farm. You do this to get materials or food to sell and make money off of tourist. Or because the villager that is working in a restaurant kept requesting X food.
There are a few quests and lore here and there about the world and the characters you interact with. But its mostly fetch quests.
