Not sudden. The Earth's axis of rotation predictably "wobbles" over thousands of years, like a spinning top. The stars also noticeably move over thousands of years, but the direction in the sky that the North Pole is "pointing" moves faster.
This was discovered over two thousand years ago by the Ancient Greeks comparing their star charts to what their ancestors had recorded just a few hundred years before.
