Something worth mentioning here is that there's no such thing as "brain dead." This is not a genuine medical state. It is a legal fiction to permit a hospital to kill you. There are a small handful of accounts of "brain dead" people waking up in the operating room having had their kidneys removed, or having their chest split open, horrifying the doctors who (thankfully) had the moral fortitude to save those individuals instead of merely finishing the job.
