I don’t follow the +10% guideline, but I do keep it in the back of my mind to avoid injury. Really just the weekend long runs I increment up somewhat strategically so I don’t go into overtraining injury territory. Mid-week runs are just for consistency and volume. I aim for 100mi/month regardless of pace or distance per run. Training volume is what matters the most.
The most natural thing is if you have an hour block to train, try to cover a longer distance in that hour than you could two months ago. There’s a huge difference for me between doing a sub1hr7mi vs. sub1hr8mi. I can consistently do 7mi in under an hour, but I have to haul ass for 8mi.
Just running and making good progress was fine until I hit 30; it was pretty low effort to base build to 3:30 marathon. Now I feel variety is important to stay balanced, which is why I’m adding this triathlon to the middle of the year
