Turkish media report that President Trump would need to obtain Turkey's permission if he decides to deploy American submarines into the Black Sea.

The Turkish newspaper Türkiye, citing international law expert Hakan Erkiner, writes that if President Trump was referring to the Black Sea when he said he would station nuclear submarines closer to Russia, then, under the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits, he would be required to obtain special permission, as the convention prohibits the permanent presence of nuclear submarines in the area.

The expert stated that Ankara holds significant legal authority in this matter, adding: "Turkey must prioritize its national interests."

He also emphasized that the Montreux Convention includes provisions that pertain directly to the security regime of the Black Sea - not just the Turkish Straits.
