In one Coffin Text, Atum speaks about the Beginning: ‘I [Atum] was still alone in the waters, in a state of inertness. I had not yet found anywhere to stand or sit, and Iunu had not yet been founded that I might be therein.’ But before Atum arose from the Primeval Waters, he created the first creatures: Shu, a male, and Tefnut, a female. There are two versions of the act by which ‘he who had been one became three’. One is told in Pyramid Text 527, which says that:
>Atum was creative in that he proceeded to masturbate himself in Heliopolis. He took his penis in his hand so that he might obtain the pleasure of orgasm thereby. And brother and sister were born – that is, Shu and Tefnut.
This is obviously a late, Heliopolis-oriented version of the myth – several other Texts say that the masturbation took place not in Heliopolis but in the Primeval Waters.
