I believe it all comes from large blue chip companies developing convoluted hiring processes because they actually needed to, since they were looking for the best talent on earth while every other pajeet was uploading a bullshit resume.

Other, less interesting companies saw Apple would hire based on astrology and run eight karmic tests before they let you even see their front door and deduced this was the key to getting the best talent, instead of, you know, the fact Apple paid them a million a year to actually work on cool shit, so all they had to do to find autistic savants who'd work a 50k a year job and turn their thermometer company into NVIDIA was to be really picky and really annoying.
