Every society has its stupid norms, it allows for cohesion so its usually a good thing. Western world is no different, so for decades we had unwritten rules about how art and literature should be consumed. Following the social etos, you were supposed to transition from cartoons into live action film. This is mainly because Western animation started as cartoons for children, so it was treated as such by all the movie critic and movie director fags. Then internet came and people were allowed to find others easier and promote their niche interest, so things changed. There's also the distribution aspect. Things only really shifted when corpos found a way to monetize it (anime wasn't mainstream before streaming services).
There is no inherent quality to the anime watchers, as its an entire medium encapsulating many different genres and tastes. Beside the fact that nerds always liked niche shit/counter culture shit on the account of being outcasts.

All the other reasons you will get itt is just people trying to explain their programmed bias.

Personally I actually regret not watching anime when I was a kid, because I was terrified of ostracism, and I thought it is gay. The only thing I watched was some stupid coomer shit like Green Green.
Now when I have a chance to watch even the stupidest shonen shit I often find myself thinking that I wish I saw it when I was a kid, instead of all these shows for degenerates like Skins or reality tv.
