felt more like a rivalry thing to me, any time an undeniably really good Japanese thing came out it was always highly praised, like MGS, SMT, Kingdom Hearts, FFX, etc. Even old console presentations were like that, throwing shade at eachother for fun. People had more guts and were less sensitive then.
