Saturn, within the esoteric tradition and astrology, is called "the Greater Malefic" because his power and governance is associated with things that humans associate with bad. He is in charge of things like time, winter, death, aging, and limits. However, the initiated perspective on his area of governance is that these harsh and cold aspects of his dominion are necessary for life, transformation, resurrection, and manifestation. Time provides us with the fabric upon which experience is built, winter requires storing and saving our labors and fertilizes the soil we till in the spring, death operates within the same function in which the gross is decomposed and transformed so new life can be generated, and it is ultimately through boundaries and limitations that the definition for all of Being is composed (there is no Self without the boundary and limit between Self and Non-Self).

Its this understanding of Saturn that leads those who are existential nihilists and hate the gross material to blaming Saturn for the structure and order of existence and Being. But Saturn is Osiris, he is Chronos, he is the Reaper and it is not his governance you hate it is your own fear of the transformation he brings that really scares people.
