Coal there had a small resurgence not so long ago when sources in the Pacific were getting washed out by rain. As soon as these sources came online the need stopped and they were shut down. We can at will blow up mountains to get enough energy to survive short term in pursuit of long term solutions. We are constrained by legislation and by politicians that can only think in 2, 4 or 8 year increments, thus long term solutions are never sought. They might give lip service to coal or nuclear but they'll never enact meaningful legislation as the results would not be present until long after they left office.
