Kemono Friends initially looks like a very happy-go-lucky show about humanoid animals that were animals who got turned by this magical substance from a volcano.

However, later in the show they show what appear to be remnants of bomber planes, as well as unexploded bombs, around the volcano area. This has some deep lore implications what went down.

There's also the fact that Kaban-chan is the only human in the show and all of the Friends have no idea what kind of an animal she is, so there's not really any telling what kind of presence humans have left anymore.

Never watched season two, so I have no idea if they actually resolved any of the open questions from the first series.
