My grandfather didn't find out the truth until late 1990's when the newly unified Germany got the east German files dating back to the war and the relevant departments were updating their historical records and contacting family members where possible across Europe. For over 50 years he wondered what happened to his eldest brother. It's just so tragic and there are many stories like it all over the continent.
Thankfully over 2.2 million German soldiers did refuse orders to fight to the last German and last house and surrendered in the final days to the allied forces and spared themselves and civilians from continued death and destruction.
Will the Ukrainian army remnants do the same when the truth becomes undeniable? I hope so.
These people WILL do the same to Ukrainian civilians when the mass breakout towards the river cities begins. I hope the military command by that point will see sense and decide to remove the Kiev government by force if need be and come to the table with the Russians. There's no need to see the cities of Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Kremenchuk and Zaporozhye and all their surrounding towns and smaller cities along the river reduced to ash and ruins for no reason.
