Remember anons, the Speed stat ONLY matters in the final part of a race. It does not have any effect in earlier phases. Frontrunning Speedtards also want good Power so they can hit their maximum pace as soon as possible in the late race.
If you have high Speed but low Power, you'll take too long to accelerate. Not only will it be harder to establish an early lead because you reach your target pace slower, but you'll get passed up by the Ends and Lates with high Power who are now blowing all the stamina they conserved to close the gap in an instant. Fix that deficiency, or use skills that increase your Acceleration like Final Push, Sprinting Gear, and Rushing Gale to actually hit that high top speed you grinded for!
If you have high Speed AND solid Power (which you probably will since SPD training also gives you a bit), then good! You should focus on skills that increase your Target Speed around late race instead, to let you achieve even greater maximums and let your Power really get put to use, whether it's maintaining your position at the front or dashing past umas ahead of you. Things like Homestretch Haste, Up-Tempo, and Prepared to Pass are all useful!
Fronts need LESS Power than Paces because they optimally want to gain a lead and leverage that distance, thus going for a higher maximum with somewhat less need to hit it ASAP - but don't confuse that for not needing any at all! The faster you accelerate to hit your maximum speed when the end of the race approaches, the better!
And finally, don't skimp on your Stamina! Maybe if you're only worried about Sprints you can, but there's no worse feeling than suddenly decelerating in the last spurt. In the worst case scenario where you keep flagging at the end, pull back from front running and pick a farther back style to improve your stamina efficiency!
