Crazy, but predicable story here. According to Moscow newspaper RBK, North Korea’s much hyped new beach resort Wonsan-Kalma was a ghost town until a Russian delegation landed this week.

Then—on cue—crowds of “locals” in DPRK-themed t-shirts & shorts suddenly poured onto the beach, posed with umbrellas, waved phones, and took group selfies in front of fountains, hotels, and slides.

The Russian tourists (just 13 in total) were the only guests on the massive 5km resort. Staff outnumbered them. Upon their arrival, it was reportedly as if a film set came alive, a fully choreographed “leisure class” materialized. No one swam. But everyone looked busy.

Some of the fake vacationers even spoke Russian. One randomly shouted “Privet!” to the RBK reporter. Another scene featured a man and woman pretending to play billiards for 24 hours straight—they were spotted at 2am, 8am, and evening, never once actually playing unless Russian journalists were watching.

The hotel shops sold ginseng liquor, North Korean cosmetics, and duty-free cognac priced up to $500 in US dollars only. Not even a souvenir banknote of the DPRK won could be obtained.

Internet access was only with a prepaid login. WhatsApp & Telegram worked. Instagram and Russian social network VK didn’t.

Pressed post before I was finished there. Meant to say it's located to the east of Pyongyang.
