Is it just me or do MLP fanfics boast an unusually high average quality? I used to look down on them but after reading other fandom's fanfictions and then moving on to webnovels from the three asian nations (syotesu, novelpia, qidian) I'm realising how they hold a higher standard of quality than the slop over there. Like, yeah, they're pretty bad, but everyone else is even worse...?
On fimfiction I thought it was tough to find decent works and that I had it rough since it took at least an hour to stumble across something of readable quality, but over at the chinese .txt file mines I'll pick up a pickaxe and will have to go at it for the entire day. It's terrible. I actually went to the chinese equivalent of fimfiction and all the ranked titles on the front pages were just works translated from english. At least the western writing scene has the collective sanity and standards not to go for low hanging fruit like systemslop or harems. People can joke about tropes like 'human walks out of everfree forest' but compared to tropes such as 'truck runs you over and you wake up in another world' it's as if you're placing a lizard before a dragon. The latter is so bad that writers fold it in seven layers of irony and I don't know what the fuck I'm reading half the time.
Like, most of the korean and chinese top novels are so self aware that it's disgusting. Korean novels don't even have a pretense of immersion, half of them are traditional truck deaths and the other half are also truck deaths but they have the protagonist monologue in the style of 'Oh yeah so like my situation is pretty cliche lol but what can you do?' Chinese novels are even worse to the point where protagonists whine for the entire series if they DON'T get a system or magic cheat. Also, tangentially, outside of Lord of Mysteries I've never seen a Korean or Chinese work not fumble an ending.
People obviously like to meme on stuff like DOAMM that's not even bad by the MEDIAN writing quality standards of the fandom, being mediocre at worst, but I've gone through hundreds to thousands of asian works at this point and I can confidently say that if DOAMM was written in gook/chink scrawl it'd be up there in the top 5. Most chinese novels just feel like worse DOAMM and I don't even think DOAMM is good aside from the worldbuilding and occasional protagonist moments - Everyone likes the protagonist in DOAMM to an unnatural degree but the writer put in an in-universe reason for this, asian novels have bitches slobber over the MC even worse than they without providing one.
The smut over there is hotter though.
Anyways.
Even outside of the asian spheres, RR is trash, though Ao3 is slightly better.
Surely, our integrity and quality retention must be from the show's morals, maybe, probably. Thank you MLP. Opening up fimfic and rereading Bad Mondays after my long pilgrimage to find other works of similar quality is like waking up next to a warm fire after being frostbitten. I'm going crazy.
