You are based for understanding this. Most /co/pers here will ignore this truth to the bitter end and even deny that there is such a thing as real anime.

The key point is that anything good/complex in those artists is already in anime as well. Japanese people don't perceive western artists the same way as the westerners here who cannot draw in Japanese styles, and using western books as references is not even close to the full picture for them. You need to read between the lines and see who is pushing that agenda here and what their motivations are.

See Saito Naoki's book for an explanation of why that's the preferred way to getting good more effectively. Also if you can master one legitimate style you can start to understand other styles too. The issue with copying only smaller non-professional artists is that they haven't necessarily had enough time to fully master their style yet and there is not enough varied material from them, but the best artists have gigabytes of high quality material already.
