Feels more like he'd dedicate his entire life to regain the trust of the town, undo the sins of his father, and emancipate/reclaim the Lucan name. Which he eventually does (with Alex and Steph's help), in memory of his mom and all the lives that were lost. Maybe even finding the courage to forgive his father later. He could do all that after a brief respite in the Midwest like in your idea.
