My gut instinct was to say it was related to the Japanese dream eating baku but I couldn't find anything to back that up.
The pipe was a Japanese leisure thing, so maybe it's that BUT my personal opinion is that it's used in the same way the Alice in Wonderland caterpillar uses his tool. It came to me in a dream. *gigglesnort*
