I wasn't alive for it but we had the same thing here. Part of it seems to have been the boomers' parents trying to shield them from the kind of harsh realities that had been force upon them during WWII and the Great Depression. This allowed them to grow up with an insulation from hardship and the idea of hardship during an era of extreme prosperity. That's really when our pushes for gun control started building, too.
