I read the old American comics by Eagle and Fleetway/Quality in my teens in the mid 00's. I was already deep into Dredd the first time I watched the Stallone movie and didn't feel like it was as bad as most made it out to be. If anything, it suffered from trying to adapt too many storylines at once

Dredd 2012 overall is a much better interpretation of the source however
