It was a literal set.
The arches and giant door are trompe l'oeil. As in FAKE. All it was was a couple of dirty mattresses on the other side of a sliding door. Can be observed in the Rusty Shackleford footage. (John McAfee likely did not kill himself.)

Those birds are clearly not owls. They are Cockatiels, specifically the Sulfur Crested Cockatoo. In the Rusty Shackleford videos this is much more clear.

I have no idea what the symbolism behind the cockatiel.
