The plot was already retarded long before the ending, it's just that it's the point of no return where the audience realizes that all the mystery boxes were building up to nothing. Even the objectively best scene in the entire series, Reiner and Berthold's reveal, has a flashback scene where Armin retroactively explains that he already knew everything that was going on and that he figured out the plot offscreen
