We took surber & drift samples, drift you just leave a net out in the creek for a set time, surber you scrape bugs off the surface of rocks in a foot square area of bed. The interesting part is in the lab when you id stuff!!!
Lucky you with your rainstorm, i love heavy rain. It's usually ephemeral up here. What kind of fish do you want? When i lived in wisconsin i had a 55 gallon native tank, i had a small white sucker & a colony of mudminnow. I also had another tank for invertebrates, i basically just scooped substrate plus plants plus water into a tank from a local flowage & let it develop as it would. Lots of really cool stuff in there
