Lady's Knight by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner is a fantasy romance novel with an identity crisis. It simultaneously wants to be a comedic romp, a second wave feminist book, & a grounded tale about queer romance and bending gender roles. The tonal whiplash in this book is insane. Nail biting tension to dumb goofs to let me lecture men about what women can do. For me, these disparate elements do not come together in a satisfactory way. Rather, I enjoyed elements of this book, mostly the more grounded elements like the jousting tournament and the romance. Those felt tense and real in a way the rest of the book felt fake and tacky. 5:10 women who know how to stab people are hot.
