You can still join but you have to go in with the understanding that current WoW is a gamey game where you are here to collect glamours, do challenge difficulty speedrunning of the same half dozen dungeons over and over, maybe dabble in some PvP, maybe dabble in some RP campaigns on Moon Guard where you show up to roll /20 with 30 other players, admire the art of the environments, and that's it. You are not going to get a real community MMO experience like in the old days or on a FF11 private server like Horizon, and you are not going to get a coherent or satisfying story experience like in a JRPG. Also, despite the name, there is no large scale WAR happening in Warcraft anymore. You will have to look to that new medieval game made by the Foxhole devs, or private servers for Age of Reckoning or DAOC.
If you want a long running RPG storyline as an alternative to FF14, check out the Trails series of JRPGs, though be advised that the overarching story about the cold war and the Ouroboros supervillains never has a satisfying payoff.
