A watch is both a status symbol and a symbol that you have sold your time to someone else and are therefore 'on the clock'. I don't have a job, so I don't have to get up on time, on a schedule set by someone else. I wake up when I want. I sleep when I want. A watch can also be a status symbol to others, indicating wealth, but I never go out, so I don't need to impress anyone with symbols of material wealth.
