Him belonging to Dess would explain it. He's in on the plan for FREEDOM, he just won't tell us directly cause of his love for Dess.
I do wonder how he'd feel about FRIEND in that case though. Surely he'd realize that this weird demonic thing whispering in Dess' ears while wearing his face is probably manipulating her.
