The whole reason they built their wealth is because they get dibs on anything entering or leaving the "South China Sea" because it's the first (or last) civilised port before hitting open ocean.
The fact they're ethnic Chinese smooths their relations with China while, at the same time, the fact they speak English smooths it with the western world.
