PM of Hungary Viktor Orban stated that Ukraine is an "undefined entity" and that it should not be admitted into NATO.
"Ukrainians, through no fault of their own, are an undefined entity. We don't even know what Ukraine is today or the extent of its borders. This kind of danger has existed before in countries of the former Soviet bloc. At first, these countries were admitted into NATO because NATO could guarantee those borders. Then the European Union accepted the other countries involved.
We understand the Ukrainians, we see their heroic struggle, and we also see that they need help — but we want to help them in a way that does not destroy us. Ukraine's membership in the EU would mean self-destruction. In no time, we would be drawn into a war with Russia, and we would drag it into the EU, including Hungary," Orban said in the Brussels studio of Kossuth Radio.
Mr. Orban is wrong: the threat for EU and Hungary is not Ukraine. It's the Russian aggression and Russian propaganda narratives.
The EU summit failed to adopt a joint statement in support of Ukraine — Hungary blocked it.
The document was not officially approved and was instead published as an annex — it was supported by 26 out of 27 member states.
The text calls for an immediate ceasefire by Russia, new sanctions against Russia and its "shadow fleet," €30.6 billion in aid for Ukraine in 2025, and recognition of Ukraine’s progress on its path toward EU membership.
